the dark side of Twitter coaching

I've changed my business model.

Coaching is no longer my 'main thing.'

I've coached more people than I can count to make their first $1000s and upwards.

Stijn for example joined Growth Army in Jule when he had 222 followers. He'd recently quit X and writing. Today he has over 11,000 followers and just hit his first $10K month.

But I realised something dark about the Twitter coaching business.

Most coaches only make money teaching others how to make money.

Now that's ok if you've grown many businesses and have retired to teach others.

But it didn't sit right with me that all these coaches (myself included) were coaching people after literally make their first $1000s while doing nothing else.

The path goes like this:

  1. Learn to grow on X
  2. Teach someone else to grow on X (make your first $1000)
  3. Teaching someone to make their first $1000 (hit $10K/month)
  4. Teaching someone to make their first $10,000 (hit $20K/month.)

And so on...

At least I did ghostwriting before coaching, but it doesn't make it much better.

This is why I've adopted a model a few great marketers I know follow (shout out to Francis Nayan and Nik Yates.)

Essentially...

I'm building real businesses and coaching what I learn on the side.

(Instead of simply coaching people what I learn from selling them the coaching...)

I've done some freelance copywriting work.

I've started working with my old copywriting mentors Fintech start-up to accelerate its growth.

Just under 3 weeks ago I started building a marketing agency with my two biz partners. We recently onboarded our first $4000/month client.

I'm starting a podcast (ok maybe not a real business lol, but close.)

And I'm in talks with a friend to start a joint YouTube fitness brand where he makes the videos and I do all the back-end marketing.

It's fair to say I've learnt a tonne more in the last month already.

The best part?

Not only can I serve my coaching clients better.

I now coach because it's fulfilling, not because I need the money.

Anyway rant over.

Yesterday I was lucky enough to call a paid ads guy at a Fortune 100 company. His small team spends $100,000,000+ a year on ads. He isn't legally allowed to talk with me about all this stuff, so he stayed anonymous. “Sell every day in every single email.” If you're growing your list with social media content, this advice is broken. Let me explain why… This advice is pushed by the world’s greatest email marketers for good reason. Emails are free to send, so if you want to make maximum money... Sell your offer in emails everyday right? Right?? Well... This works fine if you don't just use social media to grow your list, i.e. paid ads, list swaps, SEO blogs, etc. Over time... Everyone who doesn’t want to...

A follower recently asked me: “How do I get client experience as a complete beginner.” I was a complete beginner last year AND have just taken over paid ad campaigns for a client as a complete beginner. So I know I have the answer you’re looking for. The secret lies in a principle taught to me in a small private masterclass with Ben Settle, the King of email of marketing. I call it: “Turn trash, into cash.” Let me explain… I’m a paid ads noob. I have just as much experience pole dancing as I...
